The Wool Duvet Dilemma: Why Dry Cleaning is the Best Choice for Wool Duvet

As an expert in wool textiles for flooring and furnishings, I recently shared my insights on the remarkable qualities of Merino wool after testing my new Merino wool T-shirt.

Merino wool is known for its softness, natural odour resistance, and breathability, making it a true marvel. I was so captivated by its properties that I felt compelled to share this knowledge, especially considering its suitability for comfortable, all-weather wear.

Not long after, I spoke to Nicola from Art of Clean. She mentioned having a wool-filled duvet at home, quickly shifting our discussion from T-shirts to bedding. With winter approaching and her holiday plans on the horizon, I suggested it might be the perfect time to have her duvet cleaned and ready for her on her return from her holiday – ready for those chilly winter nights.

Everything seemed straightforward until I got home and told Laurence, who owns and runs Farthings, about Nicola's wool duvet. I assumed it could be cleaned like most other duvets, which we typically clean with water-based methods or traditional laundry services.

However, Laurence gave me a knowing smile and said, "You can't just launder wool duvets like synthetics, Pierre. Wool requires special care." This is when I realised that wool Carpets and wool fabrics on furniture do not get the same treatment as wool in bedding and duvets.

I was fascinated to hear all the interesting facts about getting a Wool fille duvet cleaned at the dry cleaners.

It turns out that wool-filled duvets must be dry-cleaned rather than wet-cleaned or wet-washed. Laurence shared various fascinating insights on the subject - enough to inspire this article so I could pass on everything I learned to anyone with a cherished wool duvet.

Here's what you need to know about why wool-filled duvets require dry cleaning, what to expect from the process, and how to choose the best cleaning method for your needs.

Why Wool-Filled Duvets Need Special Attention

Wool-filled duvets, prised for their natural warmth, breathability, and durability, offer a unique comfort experience. Unlike most duvets, wool-filled duvets require specific care to preserve their unique properties. Wool fibres absorb moisture very well and can hold up to 35% of their weight in water but still feel dry, leading to prolonged drying times and potential issues like clumping and unwanted odours due to the moisture. However, with the proper care, wool duvets can provide unparalleled comfort and longevity.

Here's why Dry Cleaning is the recommended approach:

-Maintains Fabric Integrity:  Wool is delicate when wet, and machine washing can disrupt its natural structure. Dry cleaning preserves the fibre structure, maintaining the duvet's loft and comfort.

-Removes Certain Stains and Soils: While dry cleaning is effective for some types of stains (especially oil-based marks), it has its limitations, which we'll discuss in detail below.

- Prevents Excessive Moisture: Dry cleaning removes dirt and oils, eliminating the risk of prolonged drying periods that could lead to mould or odours.

The Science Behind Cleaning Wool Duvets

Dry cleaning uses specialised water-less cleaning agents to clean fabrics without immersing them in water. This process is especially beneficial for wool duvets as it avoids the risk of shrinking, clumping, or the appearance of odours that can occur with water-based cleaning methods. However, considering the downsides of dry cleaning and the limitations in the removal of certain water-based marks and stains - certain stains - like yellowing, perspiration marks, or musty odours - will not be removed with dry cleaning alone.

Dry cleaners offer various cleaning methods, each suited to different fabric types and needs.
