The Shirt that reminded me why our work matters

About six months ago, a lady came into our Cambridge shop with a shirt that had quite a few marks on it.

She'd been wearing it whilst working on the punts in Cambridge and was worried we might not be able to get the marks out.

I told her we'd do our best, although, as with any stain removal, we can never promise the result.

Thankfully, after a bit of patience and work on the marks, we managed to get the shirt looking good again.

When the lady came back to collect it, she was absolutely delighted.

But it was what she told me next that I've never forgotten.

The shirt had belonged to her late father.

I hadn't known this when she'd first brought it in, and suddenly I understood why she had been so worried about getting it clean.

It was one of those moments that really touched me.

To me, it had been a shirt that needed cleaning. To her, it was something she could still wear that reminded her of her dad.

I was so pleased we'd managed to help.

At Farthings, I see all sorts of clothes come through the shop every day.

Some are everyday items, some are for special occasions, and others have been worn and loved for years.

But we don't always know what they mean to the people who bring them in.

It might be an old coat that belonged to someone's mum, a dress worn on a special day or a shirt like this one.

I think most of us have something tucked away in our wardrobe that we wouldn't dream of throwing away, even if we hardly ever wear it.

And often it's not because of what it's worth, but because of who or what it reminds us of.

Of course, we can't always remove every stain or restore every garment. Sometimes marks are permanent, and we have to be careful not to damage the fabric whilst trying to remove them.

But when we can help, especially with something that means so much to someone, it's a lovely feeling.

It's now been six months since that lady visited our shop, and I still remember her story.

That's one of the things I love about working at Farthings. I get to meet so many different people, have a chat with them and sometimes hear the lovely stories behind the clothes they bring in.

And this is one I won't forget.

So, if you have a piece of clothing that means something special to you and you're worried about cleaning it, please feel free to pop in and ask us for advice.

We can't promise miracles, but we'll always be honest about what we think we can do.

And if there's a special story behind your garment, I'd love to hear it.
