Most people find ironing a chore — tedious at best and impossible at worst.

For me, it has evolved into something completely different: calming, familiar, with even a hint of nostalgia.

It started when I was a teenager, determined to do everything my own way, especially with the school uniform. My mum left me to it, probably quite wisely.

Most mornings, I left the house with a crumpled shirt and sleeves askew, convinced nobody would notice.

Except my Nan.

To reach the bus stop, I passed my grandparents’ house. Nan would always be at the window. One look at my state and she’d call me in. “You’re not walking to school looking like that,” she’d say, already hauling out the ironing board.

She believed in doing things properly. Not showily — just properly. And that’s how I learnt to press a shirt, not because I wanted to, but because Nan quietly expected better.

Of course, I missed the bus every time. But Grandad never minded. He’d drive me to school in his Austin Maestro, radio humming, always cheerful. No fuss. Just support.

I didn’t realise then how lucky I was. I carried those lessons into adult life and into this wonderful job. Every time I smooth a collar or press a cuff at Farthings, part of me is back in that kitchen, watching steam rise in the morning sun.

I didn’t learn to iron because it was convenient. I learnt it because someone took the time to care. And that’s exactly what we try to do for every customer: with every shirt, every pleat, every press.

It’s not about perfection. It’s about pride and a quiet kind of care passed down, one morning at a time...
